Paragon Tinker Tailor Series Cup by Louis Wain (Sold)
Stock No. 227
A scarce
Paragon
porcelain child's cup, hand painted in enamels, from the
Tinker Tailor series
introduced in 1918 and designed by
Louis Wain
.
The cup is decorated with an illustration of an anthropomorphic smiling cat in a traditional peasant smock and hat, ploughing a field with another cat in the background, holding what appears to be a rod and line, striding off to go fishing. This all is set amongst pastoral scenery with a cottage and windmill on the other side, and the legend above "
The Happy Ploughboy
",also marked below with the signature of Louis Wain.
Condition is really excellent with no damages, scratches or wear - except the handle which has now been professionally and perfectly restored (invisible to the naked eye) (see illus.).
Marked to base with the Paragon Star mark and "PARAGON CHINA ENGLAND
Tinker Tailor Series
" and the hand painted pattern number 6069 (or 6909 depending on which way up it's viewed) in orange also with three tiny orange dots (probably the decorator's mark).
Dimensions :
height : 2.75 inches
(Note: This extremely scarce pattern is not mentioned in
Gifts for Good Children by Maureen Batkin Part 2. pgs.7, 8, 14, 119 & 120 +illus.
