Paragon Mother Goose Series Cup by Chloe Preston (Sold)

Stock No. 458

A very rare children's cup from the Mother Goose Series designed by Chloe Preston for Paragon circa 1918, and illustrated in hand painted coloured enamels, with two little children in nightgowns at bedtime, one seated with a cup before a fire and the other holding a doll and pointing towards the other. The legend reads "CROSS PATCH, draw the latch, Sit by the fire and spin; Take a cup, and drink it up, Then call your neighbours in".This is one of the now more obscure nursery rhymes which may date back to the 18th century, and which has several variations and possible connotations. A "cross patch" is generally taken to mean an ill tempered person.
The base bears the Paragon star mark,Below which PARAGON CHINA MADE IN ENGLAND Mother Goose Series, along with the pattern number 6066.
Condition is very good with no damages and little wear to the illustrations and text, but some minor paint speckling (from the green rim paint mostly within the interior of the cup)
